Standing In Faith When You Don’t Know What To Pray For

First of all, if we are going to talk about “standing in faith”, let’s define faith.

What is FAITH?

11 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. (New American Standard version)

Biblically, to stand “in faith” is to stand in ASSURANCE of things that you can’t see but have hope for.  As a matter of fact, the LACK of physical and logical evidence for your assurance is the very essence of faith’s existence – FAITH only IS when physical evidence is NOT!  If there is physical evidence to believe, then that leads to logic or fact, not faith.  FAITH, by definition, is simply NOT based on reason or fact.  FAITH is a supernatural, spiritual STANCE OF ASSURANCE beyond all natural logic or evidence.

We must also remember that “faith” is not something we MUSTER UP from within ourselves.  It doesn’t come from US, but it is a gift of God that all believers have been given.  The Bible says (not to think more highly of yourself than you should, because) EACH of us has been GIVEN a measure of faith.  In other words, don’t think YOU are the reason you have or do not have faith!

Romans 12:3 Amplified Bible (AMP)

For by the grace [of God] given to me I say to everyone of you not to think more highly of himself [and of his importance and ability] than he ought to think; but to think so as to have sound judgment, as God has apportioned to each a degree of faith [and a purpose designed for service].

So, the SOURCE of my faith is God.  Period.  I didn’t earn it – I can’t!  I didn’t put in “enough” time as a Christian to accrue my faith.  Otherwise, how could Jesus possibly have compared the magnitude of a believer’s faith to that of a child or a mustard seed, like He did?!  A child hasn’t had time to accrue or build up their measure of faith, and a mustard seed has as much room for faith as one of our skin cells!   By using these two examples, Jesus shows us that faith is not about our capacity, but His.

FAITH is a gift from heaven.  The supernatural ability to STAND IN FAITH, in assurance of things that cannot be seen or comprehended naturally in a situation, comes ONLY by way of our spiritual position as a child of God and is one of the most gracious gifts we’ve been given by our Papa!

Let’s dig a little deeper…

Now that we’ve established where faith comes from, we must ask what drives our stance of FAITH?  Well, most certainly the knowledge of the will, heart and character of God should be the backbone of our every prayer.  Many scriptures support this (Romans 8:27, Matthew 6:9-13, 1 John 5:14, etc).  Our ability to boldly pray prayers of faith in any situation comes from us knowing and being able to SEE where the will or heart of God is not yet fulfilled in a situation.   In other words, when we know the heart and will of God in a matter, it’s easy to recognize when it’s not there and to, therefore, STAND IN FAITH for it to be there!  When we know what the Word says about a thing, and what HE desires and/or has promised, we can SET OUR HEART IN AGREEMENT with those things, beyond all physical or visible evidence, and boldly proclaim that their reality come to pass as He desires.  For instance, we know from the Word that God wants us well, so we boldly pray for healing when someone is sick.  We know from the Word that God wants salvation for all men, so we boldly pray for the lost.  We know from the Word that God wants us free of addictions, so we boldly pray for deliverance.

But what about those times when the lines are blurred, life is overly complicated, and the specifics of the will and heart of God in situation are not so obvious and easy to discern between all parties involved?!  What about the times when you have absolutely no idea what or how to begin to pray…when you are in the thick of it and don’t know which way is up…when you don’t know what IS much less what should be in a situation?!  What about those times when, not only can you not see any reason WHY you should be confident or assured of a thing, but you can’t even see WHAT to be confident or assured of?!

How can you possibly “stand in faith” in THAT situation?

You go back to your knowledge of Him.

STANDING IN FAITH is all about setting your whole self (thoughts, prayers, words, intentions, actions, etc) in agreement with HIS heart for that which is not yet but needs to be in any given situation.   It is a determination of the heart that you want to see, and will pray and contend for, whatever GOD wants to see in a situation; EVEN if you don’t know what that is, you still want it, because you trust His intentions toward His children and you can’t settle for less.   To me THIS is one of the strongest stances of faith we could possibly have – a stance of believing and being assured of the “heart and will of God” being done with everything inside of us, unwilling to let go of that hope, even when we have absolutely no idea what the “heart and will of God” is specifically.

But, how is it even possible to STAND IN FAITH when you don’t know what you are standing for?  Because you DO know, if you know HIM.  HE is what you are standing for.  There are always things about GOD that we will know, because HE doesn’t change.  He is the same yesterday, today and forever.  And HE is the SOURCE of our faith.  So, our faith is born out of the unchanging reality of WHO He is and is a direct result of our relationship with Him.

For that reason – because we KNOW Him- we can ALWAYS and in every situation, STAND IN FAITH.  If we will but take a step back and remember WHO He is, we can always align our hearts with our Papa and SEE His will being done and His kingdom coming in OUR lives and those we are praying for even when we don’t know what that looks like!  THAT is the very gift of God!  Our hearts can REST fully assured in the intentions of God’s heart to come to pass over us, trusting that HE is GOOD and that He will do and fulfill all that He has promised, because He will never stop being Who He is!  For THAT reason, we can whole-heartedly stand in faith for whatever is wrong (according to Him) to be made right, for the most vital things to HIS plans to rise above all (our) other plans, and for Him to lead and guide us in the way that is right and most important even if we don’t consciously know where that WAY is taking us or how to get there.

I love what Jesus told Thomas in John 14:

14 “Do not let your heart be troubled believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you. If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also. And you know the way where I am going.”Thomas *said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going, how do we know the way?” Jesus *said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.

In this passage, Jesus was telling Thomas about this place that He’d prepared for him to be WITH HIM.  Sure, I believe Jesus was talking about a place prepared for us in heaven – in His Father’s house, when it’s all said and done – but, I see more here.  I see “places” of life that Jesus has also gone before us and prepared for us to walk into and live in WITH HIM on THIS side of heaven – places of purpose & destiny!  Thomas thought that he did not know how to get to the place that Jesus had prepared for him, because he didn’t even know what/where that place was.  But, Jesus told Thomas that he DID know the way!  WHY??  Because HE, Jesus, was the way, and Thomas knew Jesus!

It’s the same with us!  Be encouraged, family, that even when you think you don’t know the way, or what to pray, you DO!  If you know HIM, you know more than you know you know, because HE IS (I AM) and HE is the way – OUR way!  HE is the source and basis of OUR faith.  It is because of WHO we know (JESUS!), not WHAT we know, that we can boldly STAND IN FAITH in EVERY moment and EVERY situation for His will to be done and for His kingdom to come – and it’s a pure gift of God for us to be able to do so.  Take your stance in faith, by faith, today!
